What are the guidelines around gifting cryptocurrencies?
Like securities, the deduction is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Unlike securities, crypto is treated as property by the IRS. As such, donors must file a Form 8283 with their tax returns. If the gift is more than $5,000, the donor must obtain a qualified appraisal and complete Section B of Form 8283 (charity signature + appraiser signature).
How does the crypto donation process work?
You’ll be asked to specify the details of the gift (which coin and how much you plan to give). We’ll provide a wallet address and a QR code for that specific transaction (cannot be re-used). You’ll copy the wallet address or use the QR code in your crypto wallet to “send” the specified crypto to the destination address. It may take minutes or hours for the crypto to arrive -depending on the currency and network. Once received you’ll be notified by email with a receipt to follow shortly thereafter.
