Remembering Mair Lewis: A Legacy That Lives On

Some moments are too quiet for words, but the legacy one person leaves behind can speak volumes. Today, we honor Mair Lewis, who left this world on September 7.

Mair was instrumental in helping to found Pet Peace of Mind. She was calm, patient, gentle, and brilliant. She asked the kind of deep, intentional questions that made you pause, reflect, and sometimes see the world differently. Her dry wit, her balanced perspective, and, most of all, her kind and steady presence were gifts to everyone who knew her. She was a true muse and a fierce advocate for the vision we shared: keeping hospice patients and their beloved pets together through the end of life.

When we were trying to get Pet Peace of Mind off the ground 17 years ago, we faced many hurdles. Funding was scarce. Many hospices did not yet understand how deeply it mattered for a dying patient to keep a beloved pet by their side, and too often the concept was dismissed as simply another form of pet therapy. But Mair understood.

She believed in the mission and walked alongside us every step of the way, celebrating every single win. And when Pet Peace of Mind faced its darkest hour, Mair was one of the key voices who fought to ensure the program survived. Her quiet determination helped carry us through. Today, more than 350 hospices help thousands of patients keep their pets with them through the end of life, while also ensuring those beloved animals are safe and loved afterward.

There are thousands of families who will never know Mair’s name, but whose lives were made better because she believed this work was worth doing. Mair never wanted anyone to make a fuss over her—that simply wasn’t who she was. But the quiet, lasting difference she made in this world, and the heart she gave to Pet Peace of Mind, deserve to be remembered.

The entire Pet Peace of Mind family pays profound respect to a wonderful woman, a beautiful soul, and a lifelong inspiration. Thank you, Mair, for believing when belief mattered most.
