Callie Wasn't Just A Pet

One of our hospice partners was asked to help a veteran hospice patient who was facing one of the most heartbreaking realities imaginable: saying goodbye to his beloved Australian Shepherd, Callie.

Callie wasn’t just a pet.

She was his loyal service dog, his constant companion, and his source of comfort through every challenge he faced. The thought of leaving her behind filled him with overwhelming worry.

With the help of a dedicated volunteer foster parent, Callie visited her human one last time.

There were tears, more than a few.

But there was also peace of mind.

The patient held Callie close, looked at photos of the home where she would stay, and met the person who would love her in his place. In that moment, he could finally let go of the fear of what would happen to his best girl.

He passed away shortly after, comforted by the knowledge that Callie would be safe, cherished, and protected.

And thanks to compassionate people like you, Callie is now in a loving forever home, exactly where she belongs.
